Staff and pupils have been celebrating at St John the Baptist Primary school after improving from satisfactory to good in their recent Ofsted inspection.

Inspectors said that standards in reading, writing and mathematics had improved to the extent that in 2012 they were the highest on record at the Titchfield Common school and were consistently in line with national averages.

The school, in Abshot Road, was praised for good teaching and for providing stimulating and motivating lessons and the inspectors noted pupils concentrated during lessons, worked co-operatively and supported each other well.

But they rated pupils’ behaviour as not yet outstanding because of occasions when pupils were off task they chatted and then did not apply themselves as well as they could, meaning a limit to their progress.

Head teacher Elaine Merriman was delighted with the verdict and put it down to the dedicated staff, pupils, governors and parents in making the improvements possible.

“We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the rapid improvements made at St Johns,” she said.

“We know we are already well on our journey to outstanding with Ofsted noting outstanding teaching when observing. We are all very excited about our bright future.

“The inspectors praised our curriculum which ensures the children are highly motivated and excited about their learning and that they make at least good if not better progress.

“The outcome of the report is testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole school community and I would like to thank the staff, children, parents, governors and volunteers alike.

“This term has seen the development of an enhanced nature area, redesigned playground and a new building for our resident pre-school and wrap around care.”
