Scores of people attended the 55th annual Warsash Art Exhibition in the Victory Hall where hundreds of pieces were on display.
The Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Susan Bayford, opened the private showing on August 14 where Kim Thompson, a painter at Marwell Zoo, visited and announced Christine Dear’s painting her favourite and awarded her with ‘Highly Commended’.
Christine Dear said: “The art exhibition is always excellent and the evening classes are really good. There are always other artists from within the group coming and doing demonstrations and giving you tips on using different mediums that you wouldn’t usually work with.”
Three of her paintings were in the art exhibition and all reflected what she enjoys doing and painting.

During the course of the art exhibition there were people painting and showing younger children what they could do along with letting them have a try.
Doris Scott was painting a floral piece during the time the exhibition was open. She said: “Painting while the art exhibition is going on encourages children and makes them keen and interested in having a go. The event is well patronised and it is a very traditional thing to have it here in the Warsash Victory Hall.”
The Warsash Art Group’s 55th exhibition allows all the members – from amateur to professionals – to put forward up to four pieces of work for the display.
Ian Lawrence, who lives in Bitterne, Southampton, has been a member at the art club for eight years. He saw the event when taking a walk through Warsash and came in for a look.
Ian took evening art classes at Itchen College to find out other ways and tips of using watercolours, his preferred medium, and experimented with different materials such as oil pastels, graphite pencils and acrylic paints.
He said: “I enjoy the classes during the morning and afternoon that Warsash Art Group has to offer because I can spend time with my friends in the classes and it allows me to get away from other things.”
